events without realising it.
The Rod is a symbol of a spiritual connection that we can hold on to
in spite of terrible situations in the world. The desert represents the world
as it can be - is a place without water, which is the symbol of truth. Above in
the sun, there is a place representing an ocean of truth.

years I lived under that threat, and I painted this picture in great fear, but
the diagnosis proved incorrect, and I can still see twenty years later.

This was painted after my son died in 1979. I did it from a photograph taken
when he was two years old. The barbed wire symbolises his life, which was full
of difficulties, and the mountains and sky represent a better place where his
spirit is at rest.
